What Is Grok? A Plain-English Explainer

Facts last checked October 17, 2026 · About a 5-minute read

Grok is an AI assistant you can talk to in everyday language. You type (or say) a question or a request, and it answers, writes, explains, or creates something for you. Here is what that means in practice, with no jargon.

What's a Prompt?
A prompt is simply the question or request you type (or say) to an AI assistant like Grok. That's it! For example, typing "Give me three easy dinner ideas using chicken and rice" is a prompt. There's no special wording to learn; just ask the way you'd ask a friend. See more beginner terms in our Beginner Glossary →

The Short Version

The company behind Grok describes it as a "conversational generative AI." In everyday terms, it is a chat-style assistant that can handle tasks like answering questions (by text or voice), finding information, creative writing, making and editing images, understanding pictures and video, and helping with code.[1]

Think of it like a very well-read helper you can ask almost anything. You write in normal sentences, and it writes back the same way.

Who Makes Grok?

Grok is made by SpaceXAI LLC, which calls itself SpaceXSI on its website. The company says it is a separate company from X Corp., the company behind the X social network (formerly Twitter).[1]

Where Can You Use It?

  • On the web at grok.com.[2]
  • In the Grok apps for iPhone (iOS) and Android.[2]
  • Inside X, the social network. Grok on X follows X's own terms and help center.[1]

If you sign in, your conversations, settings, and subscription stay in sync across the website and the apps.[2]

What Can Grok Do?

According to the official docs and product page, here are the main things you can do with Grok:

  • Chat. Ask questions, brainstorm, write, and work through problems in a natural back-and-forth.[2]
  • Get current information. Grok can search the web and X live, and its product page says answers come with citations from sources.[3]
  • Talk out loud. You can have hands-free voice conversations with Grok.[2]
  • Make images and video. A feature called Grok Imagine creates images and short videos from a text description.[2][3] Images and videos it makes carry a "Grok" watermark showing they were made with AI.[4]
  • Read your files. Upload things like PDFs, photos, spreadsheets, or audio and ask Grok to summarize them or pull out details.[2]
  • Connect your other apps. "Connectors" let Grok reach your email, files, and calendar inside a chat, if you choose to link them.[2]
  • Remember your preferences. The product page lists memory across chats and custom instructions, so you can tell Grok how you like answers written.[3]
  • Speak your language. The product page says Grok works in more than 30 languages.[3]
Good to know: you own what you type into Grok and what it writes back, including images, according to the company's consumer FAQ.[1]

Is Grok Free?

Yes, you can start for free. Paid plans give you higher limits and more features.[2] Paid plans use one weekly usage allowance shared across Grok's features (chat, images, voice, and so on), and it resets on a schedule shown under Settings → Usage.[4]

Plan names and prices change, so we don't list them here. See the official pricing page for today's options,[5] or read our free vs. paid guide. One safety tip from that page: subscriptions are only sold directly through the official website, and the company says it does not authorize resellers.[5]

Does Grok Make Mistakes?

Yes, sometimes. The company itself says Grok can give inaccurate or inappropriate information, and it can "hallucinate," meaning it may state something confidently that isn't true. Its advice is to carefully consider and verify Grok's answers before relying on them.[1]

Our tip: for anything important, like health, money, or legal questions, treat Grok's answer as a starting point and confirm it with a trusted source.

A Quick Word on Privacy

  • The company may use your chats to train its models, but you can turn that off in Grok's settings (look for "Improve the model").[1]
  • "Private Chat" (the ghost-shaped icon) keeps a conversation out of your history; the company says it is deleted from its systems within 30 days and not used for training.[1]
  • The company asks you not to share personal or sensitive information in your questions.[1]

Menu names can shift over time. We'll cover privacy settings in detail in an upcoming guide.

Who Can Use Grok?

You must be at least 13. Teens aged 13 to 17 need a parent's or legal guardian's permission, and the parent or guardian must agree to the terms of service.[1]
