10 Beginner Prompts to Try
Not sure what to ask Grok? Here are ten easy, everyday prompts to copy and try. Each one shows you a different thing Grok can do.
A prompt is simply the question or request you type (or say) to an AI assistant like Grok. That's it! For example, typing "Give me three easy dinner ideas using chicken and rice" is a prompt. There's no special wording to learn; just ask the way you'd ask a friend. See more beginner terms in our Beginner Glossary →
How to Use These Prompts
Copy a prompt, then swap anything in [brackets] for your own details. There's no wrong way to ask. These are our own examples, not official ones.
If an answer misses the mark, just reply with what you'd like changed. You can keep going in the same conversation.[1]
1. Make Sense of Confusing Paperwork
Why it's useful: Official letters and forms are full of jargon. This turns them into a simple to-do list.
2. Identify a Plant from a Photo
Why it's useful: It shows you that Grok can look at pictures, not just read text. To add a photo, tap or click the + icon next to the message box.[2]
3. Find a Gift Idea
Why it's useful: Great for when you're stuck. The more details you give, the better the ideas.
4. Get Two Explanations at Once
Why it's useful: Asking for a simple version and a fuller version side by side lets you pick the one that clicks, then build up from there.
5. Let Grok Ask You Questions First
Why it's useful: This flips things around. When you don't know what details to give, Grok asks for them.
6. Translate a Message
Why it's useful: Handy for talking with family, neighbors, or on a trip. The official product page says Grok works in more than 30 languages.[1]
7. Catch Up on Something in the News
Why it's useful: Grok can search the web and X live, so it can help with what's happening now. [1]
8. Practice a Tricky Conversation
Why it's useful: Role-play is a low-pressure way to rehearse before the real thing.
9. Write a Bedtime Story
Why it's useful: A fun, low-stakes way to see Grok's creative side, and you can ask for a new ending anytime.
10. Make a Picture
Why it's useful: It's the easiest way to try Grok Imagine, and you can change the picture just by asking. [1] What you can make, and how much, can depend on your plan.[5]
Make Any Prompt Work Better
- Add details. Say who it's for, how long it should be, and what tone you want.
- Ask follow-ups. Try "make it shorter," "explain that more simply," or "give me 3 more ideas."
- Keep private things private. The company asks you not to share personal or sensitive information in your chats, so leave out account numbers, passwords, and the like.[4]
- Double-check what matters. Grok can make mistakes, so confirm anything about health, money, or legal matters with a trusted source.[4]
