How to Download Grok (iPhone, Android and Computer)

Facts last checked October 17, 2026 · About a 4-minute read

Getting Grok takes just a few minutes. Pick the device you want to use, then follow the steps. Take your time. You can't break anything.

Is it free? Yes. The Grok app is free to download, and you can try Grok for free on your phone or computer.[1][3] You only pay if you choose a paid plan later. You never have to pay just to download it.

Which device do you want to use?

On an iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad. It's the blue icon with a white letter "A."
  2. Tap Search and type Grok. Or, on your iPhone, simply tap this link to go straight to the official listing: Grok on the App Store.[1]
  3. Check the name under "Developer." On the official listing, it says X Corp. The listing also describes the app as an "AI assistant by SpaceXAI."[1]
  4. Tap the download button. It may say Get, or show a cloud with an arrow. Your iPhone may ask for your Apple password, Face ID, or fingerprint to confirm.
  5. When it's done, tap Open, or find the new Grok icon on your home screen.

The App Store listing says the app needs iPhone or iPad software version 17 or newer.[1] If it won't install, your device may be too old. You can still use Grok on a computer (see below).

On an Android Phone or Tablet

  1. Open the Google Play Store app. Its icon is a colorful triangle that looks like a "play" button.
  2. Tap the search bar and type Grok. Or tap this link to go straight to the official listing: Grok on Google Play.[2]
  3. Check the name just under "Grok." On the official listing, the publisher is SpaceXAI.[2]
  4. Tap Install and wait for it to finish.[2]
  5. Tap Open, or find the new Grok icon with your other apps.

On a Computer (No Download Needed)

On a computer, you don't need to download anything. Grok works right in your web browser, the program you already use to visit websites.[4]

  1. Open your web browser, such as Chrome or Edge.
  2. Click the address bar at the very top of the window.
  3. Type grok.com and press the Enter key. Or click here: grok.com.
  4. That's it. You'll see a box where you can type your question.

The official help page recommends grok.com in Chrome or a similar browser. It says some people using other web addresses run into missing features.[6]

Tip: to find Grok again easily, save it as a bookmark. In most browsers, you can click the star near the address bar.

Already Use the X App?

If you already have the X app (formerly Twitter), Grok is also available inside it.[4] You don't have to download a separate app to try it there. Look for Grok in the X app's menu.

Keep in mind that Grok inside X follows X's own rules and help center, not the Grok app's.[4] For beginners, we suggest the Grok app or grok.com, since that's what our guides cover.

Do You Need an Account?

You may be able to try Grok without signing in, but the company's own pages describe how things work when you don't log in.[4] We recommend signing in, for three good reasons:

  • Your chats are saved. If you don't sign in, your conversations aren't kept for you after you leave.[4]
  • Everything stays in sync. Once you sign in, your chats and settings follow you between your phone and computer.[5]
  • You get your privacy choices. In some places, you can only turn off the setting that lets the company train its AI on your chats if you're signed in.[4]

How to sign in: look for a button to sign in or sign up, then follow the steps on the screen. You can use your email, or an account you already have, such as X.[3] The official help page also mentions Apple and Google sign-ins.[6]

Remember how you signed in. Use the same way on every device. If you sign in a different way on another device, it can look like your chats or plan are missing.[6] Write it down somewhere safe if that helps.
Watch Out for Fake Apps
App stores can have look-alike apps with similar names. Before you download, check these things:
  • Check the publisher name. The real app lists X Corp. as the developer on the Apple App Store, and SpaceXAI on Google Play.[1][2] If you see a different company, don't download it.
  • Never pay to download. The real Grok app is free to download.[1]
  • Never give your card to a "Grok" app from an unknown company. The company says it only sells subscriptions directly and doesn't authorize resellers.[7]
  • Not sure? Use the direct links in this guide, or skip the app and go to grok.com instead.

After It's Installed

Nice work! Here's what to do next:

  1. Open Grok and sign in (see above).
  2. Type a simple question in the message box, the way you'd ask a friend. Try: "Give me three easy dinner ideas using chicken and rice."
  3. Send it, and read the answer. If it isn't quite right, just reply with what you'd like changed.
